Home energy efficiency is a deadly dull business, and Essess knows it. But the startup has a picture to show you, one where poorly insulated walls and drafty windows appear in a yellow so bright it makes your eyes ache. Suddenly efficiency might become interesting to the homeowner — and perhaps the entire real estate industry.

The Boston company has been called “the Google Street View of energy efficiency” because, like Google, it captures its images by “filming” as it drives up and down streets. The company has captured infrared heat scans of every home in the cities of Boston, San Francisco, Chicago and some of their suburbs and is readying to release those images to homeowners.
